Commedia del'Arte is the famous and historic Italian theatrical form consisting of improvised comedies played out by archetypal characters — for example, the clown servant (Harlequin), the suspicious father (Pantalone), the young lovers, and the pedantic doctor.
The techniques and plots of Commedia have survived into modern times through the work of such comics as Charlie Chaplin or Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy.
The Jester travels from castle to castle and from fáte to fáte. Mysterious, crazy, and slightly devilish, he warps the spirit of seriousness and self-importance. He's a veteran of many medieval banquets and risqué jokes played on kings.
